It represents the ability to see the truth.
Colors have specific meaning. So does the position of the fingers. An icon is really a bible study in paint. Since 99% of the people couldn’t read the bible, they used icons as teaching tools. It is a whole field of study called “Iconography”.
Archeologists and anthropologists make no connection with the paintings of the pagan Persions and the icons of the 4rth century and up. The pagan influence on Christianity is a fallacy and no one has been able to prove it with any academic rigor.
I think because they suck at art.
If not mistaken, it’s a symbolic thing, Alot of African Art, not just African Christian art, has big eyes and big heads because: eyes symbolize being able to see everything around you which=wisdom. Same thing having a big head symbolizes knowledge, wisdom.
I am not sure, but I have always thought that because they do it is because they are telling you to look into their eyes. That there is a message somewhere within them.
Like the man who drew Jesus (Leanardo I think if I am not mistaking) If you go look at his art work and place a mirror up to it then you can see the secrets that are in the pictures.
Alot of artists such as takashi murakami paint large eyes as a Perception on how we view our world and reality , could be something like that
Ethiopians usually have large eyes, same with Persians
